Military Heritage

Because of its location, guarding Bantry Bay as well as its proximity to the naturally deep and sheltered Berehaven habour, it has long been regarded as a strategic location. At the height of  their Empire the British had a particular interest in the island, viewing it as an important link in the Empires defence chain. From their first notable contact  with the island in 1602,through their more formal set up herein 1797 until their final departure in 1938 the  islands history has been interminably linked with the British.
